Praising the Lord is an amazing expression of worship, gratitude and adoration. David, the sweet psalmist of Israel, penned this psalm of praise to God expecting nothing in return. In Psalm 29 we find three reasons to praise the Lord.
First, praise the Lord for the matchless value of His person. Psalm 29:1-2 reads, "Give unto the Lord, O you mighty ones, Give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." The term "mighty ones" might refer to angels, but it could refer to men. Jeremiah 9:23-24 reads, "Thus says the Lord: 'Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,' says the Lord." Praise the Lord for the matchless value of His person!
Second, praise the Lord for the majestic voice of His power. The phrase "the voice of the Lord" appears seven times in Psalm 29:3-9. Here the psalmist declares the greatness of God over Baal, the Canaanite god of rain and storms. The geographical references pinpoint a region where Baal worship was widespread. Remember the power of God's voice in speaking creation into existence (Genesis 1:3, 6-27). Psalm 33:8-9 reads, "Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast." John writes, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet... His voice [was] as the sound of many waters" (Revelation 1:10, 15). Praise the Lord for the majestic voice of His power!
Third, praise the Lord for the marvelous victory of His purpose. Psalm 29:10-11 reads, "The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood, And the Lord sits as King forever. The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace." David reminds us that the Lord who "sat enthroned at the Flood... sits [enthroned] as King forever"! Those who are His people will enjoy His strength and peace. In his devotional book titled, By the Still Waters, Vance Havner recounts hearing a humble woman share the following testimony: "I praise the Lord for a deep, settled peace. The world did not give it to me, and the world can't take it away." Paul writes, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28). Praise the Lord for the marvelous victory of His purpose.
With these things in mind, let's just praise the Lord.
