While December is a season for giving, the American Red Cross is urging residents to add one more gift to their holiday traditions — the gift of life.
Blood and platelet donations are especially vital this time of year, as holiday travel and festivities often lead to a seasonal drop in donations.
Type O negative blood donors are particularly encouraged to step forward, as their universal blood type is critical for emergency care and lifesaving treatments. The need is heightened as record-breaking travel from November is projected to extend through the new year, leaving fewer donors available to contribute.
Additionally, donors who give between Dec. 16, and Jan. 3, 2025, will receive an exclusive Red Cross long-sleeved T-shirt, while supplies last.
Appointments can be made by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). More details about these offers can be found at RedCrossBlood.org/Gifts.
Residents of Baldwin County have several chances to donate:
Foley: Dec. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, 1613 North McKenzie Street.
Gulf Shores: Dec. 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City of Gulf Shores Adult Activity Center, 260 Clubhouse Drive.
Summerdale: Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Summerdale Church of Christ, 1070 State Hwy. 59 S.
The Red Cross emphasizes that blood donations save lives year-round, but the holiday season is an especially meaningful time to give. By taking a moment to donate, donors can bring joy and relief to patients and their families during what can be one of the most challenging times of the year.
