LOXLEY, Alabama — Approximately 40 residents participated in a march with several more attending a program in Loxley Monday, Jan. 16 to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The vision of Gloria Autry and organized every year with co-chair Ronnie McBride Jr., this is the 12th straight year for the march and program in Loxley.
The march up Highway 59, beginning at the Loxley Church of God to the Loxley Civic Center, commemorated the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery that created National support for federal voting rights legislation.
The march was followed by a short program, featuring a solo by A.J. Fowler and keynote speaker Lawrence L. Battiste, assistant chief with the Mobile Police Department. The theme for this year’s program was “Move Forward.”
Nationwide the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is held on the third Monday of January to commemorate his birthday on Jan. 15.
