BAY MINETTE — Poll worker training is an essential part of the election process in Baldwin County and throughout the country.
"The law requires that poll workers attend classes before they can be appointed as poll workers," said Baldwin County Probate Judge Harry D'Olive. "The law requires that we hold poll worker training before every primary and general election."
Classes were held throughout the month of April for primary election training at five locations in Baldwin County, the Baldwin County Central Annex in Robertsdale, the Foley Civic Center, the Fairhope Civic Center, the John F. Rhodes Civic Center at the Bay Minette City Hall, and the Stockton Civic Club.
"Some of the classes were a little lighter than we had hoped, and a makeup class has been scheduled (for the last week of April)," D'Olive said. "We're confident that with the makeup class we will have enough poll workers available for the primary elections (May 24)."
To volunteer or sign up for classes, call the Probate Office at 251-937-0260 and select election information.
About 500 poll workers are needed for each election, D'Olive said.
General election training will be held at each of the locations in October including:
Three classes available at the three locations, 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Two classes available at both locations, 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
"Not everyone who attends the training will be selected as a poll worker," D'Olive said. "But we always like to have a good selection of trainees available to fill in if needed."
