Polar Bear Plunge rings in New Year with chilly splash

GULF SHORES — Hundreds of brave souls rang in the New Year with a frosty dip at the annual Polar Bear Plunge at The Hangout, a family-friendly event that showcased fun, community spirit and a good cause.

In partnership with the City of Gulf Shores and the Kiwanis Club of Gulf Shores, the Polar Bear Plunge has become a cherished tradition benefiting the Law Enforcement Torch Run. This year's festivities kicked off at 10 a.m. on New Year's Day with a lively party featuring a DJ, beach bonfire, games and entertainment leading up to the big dip at noon.

Participants arrived in droves, including visitors from as far away as Wisconsin. Many were decked out in costumes that added a festive flair to the event. From polar bears to a life-sized bag of Cheetos, the creativity on display was as entertaining as the plunge itself.

The weather was ideal for a New Year's Day event, with a high of 62 degrees adding a touch of warmth to the icy plunge directly behind The Hangout. Cheers erupted as participants braved the cold Gulf waters. To warm up afterward, attendees enjoyed complimentary chili and hot chocolate while the party continued with live music and camaraderie at The Hangout.

The event was free, though many supported the cause by purchasing Polar Dip souvenir t-shirts. Proceeds benefited the Gulf Shores Kiwanis Club and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

"This event is such a special way to start the New Year," said Taylor Means, a Gulf Shores Kiwanis Club member. "The energy, the costumes, the generosity — it's what makes Gulf Shores such a wonderful community."
