Girl Scouts with Troop 8017 in Fairhope held a ceremony last week to plant a tree in Knoll Park.

The troop purchased the young tree, a live oak, and planted it in the same spot where a beloved, decades-old live oak once stood and was destroyed by Hurricane Sally last year.

The troop’s tree is part of the Girl Scouts Tree Promise program, a national initiative to encourage Girl Scouts across the globe to plant 5 million trees in the next five years.

Fairhope Arborist David Weaver and Horticulture Supervisor Jamie Rollins helped the scouts plant the tree and taught them how to properly care for young trees.

The scouts, who vary in age from 2^nd to 12^th grade, were excited when Rollins told them it would grow large enough for their grandkids to climb on.
