Downtown OWA was the location of the Gulf Coast Community Safety Day with the help from over a dozen local first responder units on Saturday, Aug. 25. The event was free to the public.
Guests were welcome to interact with the first responders who were onsite to answer any questions from the community. Everyone was invited to participate by boarding an ambulance, checking out the SWAT vehicles and the State Trooper’s chopper, and even meet one of the local furry officers from Foley’s K9 unit. The Foley Fire Department set up their educational inflatable Smokehouse, where kids could learn safety tips in case of a fire. The Lower Alabama Search and Rescue put on rappelling demonstrations from OWA’s rooftops, and the Forestry Commission provided excellent photo opportunities as well as important lessons.
A race was held through the streets featuring first responders participating on Jumbo Tricycles as they navigated a cone obstacle course.
The event was the perfect chance for the community to get to know first responders, see the equipment and technology they use in everyday life, and enjoy a day full of learning and safety tips.
