The culinary mad scientists behind Southern Chili Lab are closing the doors for now.
Gulf Coast Media shared the exciting news that Southern Chili Lad would be expanding to offer cooking classes and chef’s table dinners back in April. Founders Jonathan Kastner and Tyler Braun leased a new space at The Wharf and were putting plans together, hoping to open this year.
When we last talked to Kastner for an update over the summer, he was trying to work through some issues with permitting but still had hoped everything would work out. On Sunday, Aug. 4, Southern Chili Lab (SCL) posted a statement on its Facebook page stating:
“A few months ago, we relocated to a new space with the intention of offering new services including cooking classes in addition to making out products. But due to unforeseen circumstances within the space, we are unable to get our new space permitted for operation. With this unfortunate situation, SCL will be ceasing operations, scaling back and reconfiguring our business model.”
In just one hour, the Facebook comments and shares all expressed sadness for the closure.
Gulf Coast Media has followed the evolution of Jonathan Kastner’s career and the start of SCL. From a guest chef series at Gulf Shores High School in 2019 and culinary camp in Orange Beach to Anchor Bar and Grill and SCL, Kastner has graced the pages of our newspaper for years. His passion for delicious food and teaching the next culinary generation shines through.
Braun brought his impressive culinary experience to the partnership, which ranges from local kitchens to Michelin Star restaurant experience. The duo fermented their way into the Gulf Coat condiment lovers’ hearts. Hopefully, this is just a “see you later” and not a goodbye.
