While their job is usually to hype up the crowd, Baldwin County cheerleading teams had their community cheering for them as Orange Beach High School and Daphne Middle School returned with AHSAA State Championships.
The Makos were crowned the queens of the Class 4A Varsity Game Day division for the program’s first state title and the Trojans won the Junior High Large division to earn a bid to compete at nationals. Orange Beach took first out of 28 teams and Daphne was first out of four teams where Bay Minette Middle School finished third in the same division.
Daphne Middle School was also represented in the Junior High Game Day Large division and finished eighth overall. The Trojans finished second in the same division last season.
Robertsdale, Daphne take second
The Robertsdale Golden Bears had squads compete in two divisions where the Varsity Coed group finished as state runners-up after also earning second place at Universal Cheer Association and AHSAA Regionals. In Class 7A Varsity Game Day, Robertsdale finished sixth out of 18 teams after the Golden Bears won the division at UCA Regionals.
Similarly, Daphne High School’s Varsity Game Day squad finished as state runners-up in the Class 7A Varsity Game Day division after the Trojans took third at regionals. In the Class 7A Varsity division, Daphne entered as regional champions and took home a seventh-place finish out of eight teams.
Baldwin County, Gulf Shores, Spanish Fort, Fairhope also represent at state meet
Also on the Varsity Coed stage, the Baldwin County Tigers entered as AHSAA regional champions and earned a fourth-place finish out of six teams at state. Baldwin County took home runner-up finishes in the previous two AHSAA state championships.
At the Class 6A level, the Gulf Shores Dolphins were represented in the Varsity division and the Spanish Fort Toros competed in the Varsity Game Day Division. Gulf Shores finished seventh out of 11 teams and Spanish Fort finished 17th out of 22.
Fairhope was represented on the high school and middle school circuits where the high school Pirates recorded a 10th-place finish out of 18 teams in the Class 7A Varsity Game Day division. Fairhope Middle School finished fifth out of 27 teams in the Junior High Game Day Small division.
