ORANGE BEACH — Orange Beach is set to approve rates and round fees for the recently constructed shooting facility.
The city presented a resolution outlining the details for operation at the May 6 council meeting that is set to be voted on at the May 20 meeting. The resolution will immediately go into effect if it is approved.
According to the resolution for the topic, the Orange Beach Shooting Complex will be home to several areas “designed for the use of specific types of firearms,” such as a rifle range, pistol range, trap and skeet range and a police training range.
The “policies and procedures” for the different areas will vary based how the site is being used, whether public or private entities require access, and the “needs of the city.”
The framework of fees for the rifle range currently states an Orange Beach resident single membership for $125, resident family membership for $125 plus $25 for each additional family member, non-resident single membership for $200 and a non-resident family membership for $200 plus $25 for each additional family member.
Trap and skeet pricing is set to start at $12 per round for non-members, $9 per round for members and $5 for members of the Orange Beach Middle/High School trap and skeet team.
The resolution details how the mayor is authorized to grant exceptions to the fees for “local civic organizations.” This is to promote events that are open to the public and work at “enhancing community spirit and growth.”
It also details how the mayor will appoint a city employee to serve as director of the complex. It will be the director’s job to “establish rules and policies” for maintenance and operation.
The director is to work alongside the Orange Beach police chief and the city’s Coastal Resources director to ensure “safe and efficient operation.” The police chief is to oversee action at the pistol range, fixed and full movement rifle ranges. The Coastal Resources director is to oversee the trap and skeet range.
Councilmember Jeff Silvers said at a previous council meeting how the shooting range is a "mighty fine facility" that will "be great for our citizens."
