An Orange Beach man has been arrested in connection with an abandoned vessel left crashed at the Perdido Pass.
According to information from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division, a boating incident occurred Aug. 12, 2024, when a 2014 Nautic Star struck a jetty at the pass in Orange Beach. Following the incident, troopers reported, the driver refused to remove the vessel from the jetty. It was ultimately removed by the Alabama Department of Conversation and Natural Resources.
Troopers arrested 52-year-old James H. Hamrac III on Jan. 8 on derelict vessel charges. He was initially booked into the City of Orange Beach Jail before being transported to the Baldwin County Jail.
A state law that has been in effect since 2018 established a formal statewide program, administered through ALEA, to address abandoned or derelict vessels (ADVs). The act makes it unlawful for the owner of a derelict vessel to refuse or fail to remove it from state waters within 24 hours after a verbal or written request from a law enforcement officer.
