ORANGE BEACH — It was all gas and no brakes for Orange Beach as the Makos cruised by the Robertsdale Golden Bears Friday night at home by a score of 45-14.
It marked Orange Beach’s third-straight win and 40-point game after the Makos set a program record with 56 points last week. Following a Week 3 loss at Bayside Academy on Sept. 6, Orange Beach has outscored opponents 143-78 during its win streak.
Mako head coach Wade Waldrop was impressed with what he saw from his team’s performance and execution despite a rough week of practice.
“Super proud of our kids for how hard they played,” Waldrop said after the game. “We didn’t have a great week of practice and I think our kids will tell you that. But I thought their focus coming in, playing up in class, playing a 7A school, massive numbers and size, they were a lot bigger than us with a tough scheme. What they’re doing is tough.”
Mako offense stays hot
From the start, Orange Beach came out firing and never looked back. JW McAlpine, the Makos’ junior quarterback, had four total touchdowns on the night with two each through the air and on the ground. Junior running back Aiden Kee also found his way into the endzone on Friday night, as did senior wide receiver Kaden Shows.
“This is the third game we’ve scored 40-plus points in a row,” Waldrop said. “To do it against a higher-class opponent, just proud of those guys and able to finish the game out tonight and get some younger guys in. Really, really proud of our kids.”
Brunick has impact all over field
Orange Beach junior standout Blake Brunick continued to be a force for the Makos. Friday night, he returned a punt for a touchdown and also caught one of McAlpine’s touchdown passes.
Waldrop cited Brunick and senior defensive lineman Austin Beck as some of the reasons behind the team’s production.
“They’ve just been bell cows for us,” Waldrop said. “They both play on defense, they both play the whole game, and when they come in on offense, they both give us something, a different dynamic. … Hopefully we’re trending in the right direction.”
Golden Bear miscues
Robertsdale had trouble keeping up with Orange Beach’s tempo and at times it came at a cost.
The Golden Bears struggled to move the ball down the field consistently, suffered three fumbles and also muffed a punt which resulted in an Orange Beach touchdown the following drive.
In the loss, senior defensive back Logan Gregson highlighted Robertsdale’s defensive play and provided a pick-six to open the scoring for the visitors. Junior quarterback Cameron Joseph also registered a throwing touchdown for the Golden Bears.

The Makos improved to 4-2 overall and are scheduled to stay on their home turf next weekend when they host Escambia County on Oct 4. The Blue Devils will enter 2-4 overall following a Friday win over the Northview Chiefs from Florida 14-0. Orange Beach owns a 2-0 mark within Class 4A Region 1 and Escambia County is 0-3.
Robertsdale fell two games below .500 at 2-4 overall. The Golden Bears are scheduled to resume Class 7A Region 1 play next weekend when they take their 0-3 region record on the road to face Baker. The Hornets will be coming off a bye with a 4-1 overall record and 3-0 mark in region play.
