Orange Beach celebration marks 250th anniversary of American Army and Battle of Bunker Hill

Posted

The Sons of the American Revolution and the local Daughters of the American Revolution will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Army and the Battle of Bunker Hill with a flag ceremony and pavilion display June 14 at The Wharf from 3 to 5 p.m.

The Second Continental Congress authorized the creation of the Continental Army on June 14, 1775, establishing the first national institution of the United States with George Washington appointed as commander in chief. Three days later, on June 17, 1775, American forces clashed with the British at Bunker Hill in a pivotal battle of the Revolutionary War. Though ultimately forced to withdraw after running out of ammunition, American troops inflicted more than 1,000 casualties on the British, nearly half the attacking force. British losses included a quarter of their officers deployed in North America. The battle provided a significant morale boost for the American cause, demonstrating the colonists' resolve and ability to stand against the world's most powerful army.

Members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution will set up a pavilion near the Events Center at Orange Beach, offering visitors a chance to experience Revolutionary War history firsthand. Re-enactors in period dress will showcase uniforms and artifacts while period music plays and a presentation on the Battle of Bunker Hill unfolds.

At 5 p.m. a color guard from the SAR and DAR will raise the American 13-star flag at the flagpole at The Wharf Events Center. The city of Orange Beach will issue a proclamation recognizing the 250th anniversary of the American Army's founding and the Battle of Bunker Hill.

This free, family-friendly event aims to honor the significance of these historic milestones and their impact on America and the world. Displays and activities are designed to educate the public about the American Revolution and highlight the work of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.

The celebration is sponsored by the City of Orange Beach and the Wharf and coordinated by the General Galvez Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The official event logo is the 13-star American flag, known as the Betsy Ross flag.
