Optimist Club honors law officers, awards scholarships

LILLIAN — The Optimist Club of Perdido Bay recently honored members of law enforcement agencies at their annual Respect for Law Day breakfast.

This year's Law Officers of the Year are Deputy Bill Smith, Deputy Sydney Wentworth, Baldwin County Sheriff's Office and Detective Joshua Reeves, Daphne Police Department.

Deputy Smith lost his life saving swimmers in the water off Fort Morgan in 2021. Deputy Wentworth was also on the scene and helped in the life-saving effort. Detective Reeves was described by District Attorney Robert Wilters as an "all-round good officer, always willing to help the citizens of Baldwin County."

In addition to Law Officer of the Year Awards, five scholarships were given to children, grandchildren or stepchildren of Baldwin County Law Officers who will be attending college this year.

The Richard Wendall Humphrey Memorial Scholarships were presented to Kailey Mooney and Emma Grace Vannay.

The Optimist Club of Perdido Bay also presented scholarships to Taija Graves, Skylar Millines and Kennedy Morris.

Others nominated for Law Officer of the Year are Officer Charles Cooper, Alabama Pardons and Paroles; Deputy Brian Singler, Baldwin County Sheriff's Office; K-9 Harko, Bay Minette Police Department; Cpl. Timothy Birt, Daphne Police Department; Officer John Branscomb, Elberta Police Department; Officer Ray Clark, Fairhope Police Department; Officer Joseph Bottoms, Foley Police Department; Officer Chris Miller, Gulf Shores Police Department; Cpl. Michael McBrayer, Officer James Singleton, Officer Dustin Colburn and Officer Brennan Giles, all of the Orange Beach Police Department; and Officer Juanita Odom, Silverhill Police Department.
