It's the most wonderful time of the year — for setting up a Christmas tree, that is.
Unless you're battling cats who think your Christmas tree is their new playground (I'm looking at you, Mimic). Or, maybe you're short on space, pressed for time or simply looking for a way to shake up your holiday decor. Whatever the reason, skipping the traditional tree doesn't mean skimping on holiday cheer.
We looked around Facebook, Etsy and craft sites for simple and inexpensive ways to have a tree without actually having a tree. From crafty creations to clever repurposing, these alternatives bring festive flair to your home without the fuss — or feline sabotage.
So, ready to deck the halls? Here are five creative options to try this holiday season.
Perfect for little hands, a felt tree is a playful addition to any playroom or bedroom. Purchase or craft a felt cutout of a Christmas tree and pair it with Velcro-backed ornaments. Kids can "decorate" the tree to their hearts' content, leaving the grown-up decorations untouched. This is also a great idea for those of us who are indecisive on how they want to decorate and move things days after setting up a tree.
You already have presents. Why not turn your presents into a focal point by stacking them into a tree-shaped arrangement? Use beautifully wrapped gifts (or empty boxes if you are just looking for more Christmas décor ideas) decorated with wrapping paper and twine or bows for a charming aesthetic. Not only does it save space, but it also makes unwrapping day even more magical as the "tree" comes apart gift by gift.
Turn this year's (and/or last year's) holiday cards into an eco-friendly display. Arrange the cards in a triangular tree shape on a wall, using painter's tape to secure them. Add a vertical card as the "trunk," and place your arrangement above a console table to create a faux tree with room for gifts beneath. Its a great way to show off those heartfelt greetings while creating a cozy holiday vibe.
For a minimalist yet impactful approach, print a photo of a Christmas tree at a local office store. Hang the large-scale image like a tapestry using a wooden dowel and string. You can keep it simple or attach lightweight ornaments to the print for a unique, interactive display.
Bonus: It's flat, making it a great option for tight spaces — or homes with curious cats.
Who needs a towering evergreen when a tiered tray can do the trick? Instead of filling it with treats, adorn it with shiny Christmas ornaments, fairy lights and a miniature star on top. It makes a festive centerpiece for your dining or coffee table, blending functionality with holiday spirit.
Whether you're working around space constraints, a busy schedule or a mischievous Mimic, these alternatives prove that a tree-less Christmas can still be merry and bright. So, grab some ornaments, ribbons and maybe a bit of felt — because holiday cheer knows no bounds.
