Mobile Airport Authority propels economic growth with Washington D.C. flights provided by United Airlines

It has only been a little over a month since Gulf Coast Media reported on the announcement that Breeze Airways has unveiled plans to bring its services to Mobile International Airport, less than a week since announcing the Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) has been awarded a $2 million grant aimed at facilitating the expansion of the Brookley Aeroplex, and today, the MAA announced that United Airlines will be offering nonstop service from Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) to Washington D.C.

"We’re pleased to bring Mobile convenient nonstop access to Washington, D.C.," said Mark J. Weithofer, United’s Managing Director of Domestic Planning. "The new flights will also provide seamless connections to more than 50 domestic and 20 international destinations via United’s hub at Washington Dulles International."

The Mobile Airport Authority announced on March 1 that United Airlines will commence nonstop service from MOB to Washington D.C. starting June 27, marking a significant development for travelers in the Gulf Coast region.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson hailed the announcement as transformative for the region, emphasizing its significance as a game-changer with United Airlines' introduction of a new daily direct flight option to Washington, DC, symbolizing confidence in Mobile's market. Chris Curry, President of the MAA, echoed the sentiment, expressing excitement for the enhanced accessibility and economic growth prospects brought by the new nonstop service. Bradley Byrne, President and CEO of the Mobile Chamber, highlighted the economic implications, highlighting the route's role in fostering collaboration and positioning Mobile as a hub for growth, aligning with strategic goals of attracting businesses seeking direct access to the nation's capital.

The new route aims to offer convenient access to the nation’s capital, catering to both business and leisure travelers. Passengers departing from MOB will benefit from twice-daily, nonstop flights to Dulles International Airport (IAD), a pivotal hub serving the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

“Launching a nonstop flight from Mobile to Washington D.C. is a monumental achievement for our city and region,” said Mobile Airport Authority Chairman Elliot Maisel. “After years of demand, we’re thrilled to finally offer this direct route, which not only enhances our connectivity but also signifies our commitment to elevating the travel experience for both our business community and leisure travelers.”

The MAA oversees Mobile Regional Airport (MOB), Mobile International Airport (BFM), Brookley Aeroplex and St. Elmo Airport, contributing $2 billion to Alabama's economy. MOB hosts major carriers like Delta Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines, connecting to key hubs including Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, Houston and soon Washington D.C. BFM, crucial for multimodal connectivity, is undergoing terminal and parking garage construction, with Breeze Airways set to launch service to Orlando in April 2024. Home to Airbus facilities and other industry giants, BFM highlights Mobile's aviation prominence. Brookley Aeroplex supports over ninety businesses, while St. Elmo Airport caters mainly to corporate and private aircraft needs.
