Mobile Airport Authority acquires 272-acre property in significant milestone for city, travelers

The Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) has acquired property that previously belonged to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Mobile Housing Board (MHB) at Michigan Ave and Interstate 10 in Mobile, according to a Wednesday, July 10, press release.

This acquisition provides MAA an additional 272 acres, including Thomas James Place and R.V. Taylor Plaza, with a master plan now being commissioned to determine best use of the site. The authority states this property will "well-serve" present MAA endeavors and help fund future operations.

Completion of the new Mobile International Airport (BFM) terminal and parking garage, a project that broke ground in December 2022, is expected in late 2025 or early 2026, with its steel framing already visible. MAA also currently owns and operates Mobile Regional Airport (MOB), Brookley Aeroplex and the St. Elmo Airport in addition to BFM, creating $2 billion in economic impact for Alabama residents.

“The purchase of this property is another step toward the completion of our objectives as outlined in the airport master plan,” MAA president Chris Curry stated. “As an economic engine for the region, revenue generated from this purchase will help to improve our campus and support our efforts to provide premium air service to the customers of our region.”

MAA also recently launched BuildBFM.com, a website intended to provide the public updates regarding ongoing construction, project milestones and community engagement opportunities.

The new terminal is set to feature five gates with the ability to expand to 12, as the new garage will host 1,250 spaces to improve convenience for both travelers and visitors alike.

"BuildBFM.com reflects our commitment to transparency and community involvement," Curry added. "We are thrilled to provide this platform for residents and travelers to follow the progress at BFM. We look forward to the day when all commercial flights in the city take off from Mobile International Airport.”
