BAY MINETTE — Matt McKenzie of Fairhope won the Republican nomination for Baldwin County Commission District 2 on Tuesday, June 21, in the only local race on the 2022 primary runoff ballot.

McKenzie took 54.89% of the vote to defeat Steve Carey of Daphne. McKenzie received 11,171 votes to 9,180 for Carey, according to complete, but unofficial, returns following the runoff.

McKenzie does not face a Democratic opponent in the Nov 8 general election. He was one of three candidates running for the seat held by Joe Davis of Daphne, who did not run for reelection. Davis and Carey took the top two seats in the Republican primary May 24 with Jonathan Armstrong taking third place.

Two of the three other commissioners, Jeb Ball and Billie Jo Underwood, did not face opposition in their bids for re-election. District 4 Commissioner Charles "Skip" Gruber defeated challenger Chris Crawford in the May primary and will face Democrat Alec Barnett.

Voter turnout was light in the runoff with 22,373 ballots cast, Probate Judge Harry D'Olive Jr. said, 14.2% of the 157,307 voters registered in Baldwin County, according to Board of Registrars officials.

In state Republican runoff races, Baldwin County voters supported nominee Katie Britt in her bid for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Richard Shelby. Britt, who won the statewide race, received 14,913 Baldwin County votes to 6,833 for Mo Brooks.

In the race for secretary of state, Jim Zeigler edged out Wes Allen in Baldwin County, 10,361 to 10,310. Allen won the statewide runoff race, however, for the Republican nomination.

Andrew Sorrell took 12,276 Baldwin County votes in the race for state auditor against Stan Cooke, who received 6,928. Sorrell also won the state runoff.

In the runoff race for Public Service Commission Place 1, Brent Woodall received more Baldwin County votes over candidate Jeremy Oden, 9,658 to 8,078, but Oden won the statewide race.

In the Place 2 race for Public Service Commission, Chip Beeker received 9,143 Baldwin votes to 8,609 for Robert McCollum. Beeker also won the statewide race.

In the one Democratic race on the Baldwin runoff ballot, Malika Sanders-Fortier received 284 Baldwin County votes for governor against 242 for Yolanda Flowers. Flowers won the statewide race for the nomination to face incumbent Kay Ivey in November.

No legislative races were on the runoff ballot in Baldwin County. One race for a Baldwin County House of Representatives district remains to be decided in November. In District 95, Frances Holk-Jones, who won the Republican nomination in the May primary, will face Democrat Richard Brackner for the seat that had been held Steve McMillan who died earlier this year.
