Rumors that the McDonald's restaurant on Greeno Road in Fairhope would soon undergo reconstruction have been confirmed. Construction crews and equipment were spotted at the site last Thursday, signaling the start of rebuilding efforts.
The McDonald's, located at 111 Greeno Road, was destroyed by a fire on Thanksgiving Day last year. The blaze, which originated in the roof area, spread rapidly, consuming the building before firefighters could fully contain it. The restaurant was open at the time, but no injuries were reported.
Firefighters from Fairhope, Daphne, Spanish Fort, Marlow and Silverhill responded to the scene.
Public records list Greeno Properties Northeast Inc. of Spanish Fort as the owner of the property. The building, deemed a total loss, was in the process of being demolished Feb. 15. At that time, the owners announced their intention to rebuild the McDonald's.
The reconstruction is being handled by Stansell Construction, a Tampa, Florida-based contractor.
While many community members have been asking about when reconstruction on McDonald's would start over the past year, there are many who said they feel it isn't needed and would rather see something else built in the space, such as Chick-fil-A or Culver's.
