Looking to extend your Valentine's Day celebrations? Lulu's in Gulf Shores will be hosting their annual vow renewal ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 17, presenting the perfect opportunity to extend the romance into the weekend.

According to Jenna Romano, marketing manager, the iconic island restaurant has hosted the event for over a decade and typically garners a large crowd of participants.

"We've been doing it for a long time. We have hundreds of couples come every year," Romano said. "It's around Valentine's Day, so we usually try to have the event go hand-in-hand with the holidays."

Romano added that the inspiration behind the event was to appeal to snowbirds as the island typically attracts a large number of seasonal visitors looking for warm weather during the winter months.

"Everyone is welcome, but it's definitely geared toward the snowbirds," Romano said. "We love having them in town, and this gives them something fun to do. It's grown and grown each year."

Romano said that even she and her husband have participated in the nuptials at a previous ceremony.

"Everyone does the vow renewal at the same time. They turn to their partners, hold hands and recite the vows," Romano said. "All the men tear up, so it's really fun."

However, while Romano said the event is typically geared toward couples who are already married, there have been real wedding ceremonies in past years.

"We haven't had one in a few years, but if someone was interested we would have an ordained minister and get them a table so they could eat afterwards," Romano said. "It would be kind of like eloping, it would be a small ceremony and we would try to go above and beyond for them. We would do their vows and agreements and then the big vow renewal ceremony."

Romano said that the vow renewal ceremony will also include a wedding certificate, wedding cake, a champagne toast, bridal flowers and prizes for the shortest and longest marriage and best dressed couples.

"We will be open for business like usually, and sometimes people who are just having lunch will join in at the last minute," Romano said. "It's a lot of fun, it brings up all the warm and fuzzy feelings and looking into your partner's eyes you feel so glad to be doing this again."

The event will take place on Feb. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. While online registration for the event has closed, interested parties can register on the day of the event starting at 12 p.m.
