À la Carnivale!

The birthplace of Mardi Gras may be across the bay in Mobile, but Loxley is putting its own spin on the Gulf Coast's favorite season of revelry.

The town is gearing up to host its first-ever Mardi Gras parade on the evening of March 1, marking a new chapter in Baldwin County's celebration of this cherished tradition.

"It is with great pride that we introduce the Knights of Côte d'Azur, Loxley's inaugural Mardi Gras Association," a member of the society's executive board told Gulf Coast Media.

The parade is organized by the Knights of Côte d'Azur, Loxley's inaugural Mardi Gras society. According to the society, the all-male mystic society, whose name translates to "riviera" in French, pays homage to Baldwin County's picturesque coastline, often affectionately dubbed the "Redneck Riviera." With a theme of "Knight One," the Knights are set to bring their signature flair to the streets of Loxley, culminating in a grand ball at the Loxley Civic Center.

"We are dedicated to preserving the rich legacy of Mardi Gras in the heart of Central Baldwin County, creating timeless memories and weaving this enchanting tradition into the cultural fabric of our growing community for generations to come," the board member said.

Founded by a group of local men who have long celebrated Mardi Gras across Baldwin County, the Knights of Côte d'Azur have grown rapidly, according to the board member.

"In less than 12 months, we have surpassed 160 members, with strong interest continuing to grow," he said. "Our membership is drawn from across the region with a core foundation rooted in Central Baldwin County."

With the support of Loxley Mayor Richard Teal and city council, the society has worked to bring Mardi Gras magic to the growing town.

"As charter members, we are deeply rooted in the community and committed to bettering it in every way possible," the board member said. "Recognizing Loxley's tremendous growth, we sought to establish an organization that not only honors the Gulf Coast's rich Mardi Gras traditions but also showcases our vibrant city and its exceptional people."

The parade, which will start at 6:30 p.m., will kick off at the Loxley Civic Center and follow a route through the town. Floats will roll down Highway 59 to the red light at County Road 64, where they'll turn left. The procession will then make another left onto Railroad Street and loop left onto Relham Street, returning to Highway 59. From there, the parade will head back to its starting point at the Civic Center.

The Knights are calling on the community to embrace the spirit of Carnival and join them for this landmark event.
