Students spanning throughout the area put their entrepreneurial skills to the test this past May for the Coastal Alabama edition of the nationwide program known as Lemonade Day.

Students received material and had the ability to attend workshops in the months before learn a variety of skills including stand building, recipe development and finance. All of this training led up to the big day where they had the chance to run their very own stand at a designated location in the community.

"This was easily our most active year yet," said Coastal Alabama Lemonade Day City Directory Penny Hughey, "I never cease to be amazed by the students' creativity, some as young as kindergarten age, and how well they understand and implement the lessons taught throughout the program."

A committee of judges visited each stand and graded on a rubric addressing topics such as stand design, creativity, introductory pitches and taste. Students were recently celebrated at a ceremony taking place at the Gulf Coast Culinary Institute at Coastal Alabama Community College. A variety of prizes were donated by local business including Waterville, The Factory, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, and a grand prize season pass to OWA for the 'Best of the Zest' first place winners.
