JOSEPHINE - Nearly 40 local children and their families got up bright and early on Oct. 9 to set out to local waterways to catch some fish during the Wolf Bay Watershed Watch Organization’s annual Stan Mahoney Youth Fishing Tournament. Some families even began the previous evening on Oct. 8.

This year’s tournament was held at Pirate’s Cove Marina & Restaurant. Young fishers between the ages of 3 - 18 participated in the tournament, which began at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 and continued until 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 9 when final weigh-ins were held. Prior to the announcement of tournament winners, participating kids had the opportunity to win a variety of great door prizes donated by tournament sponsors and partners, including a brand-new kayak.

Holden Harris took the title of Master Angler in the ages 3 - 8 category this year, with a total catch of 38.05 pounds. Other winners in the ages 3 - 8 category were Jacques DeCuir for Heaviest Pinfish (1.8 ounces) and Heaviest Bass (7 ounces), Aleksander DeCuir for Heaviest Spotted Fish (1 pound, 43 ounces), Noah Langley for Heaviest Catfish (13 ounces) and Grant Clark for Heaviest Redfish (6.47 pounds).

In the cumulative weight category for ages 9 - 13, first place went to Brantley Hoffman (7.55 pounds), second place to Amzie Spivey (4 pounds, 8.6 ounces) and third place to Evan Carol (3 pounds, 3.7 ounces). For the ages 14 - 18 category, Andrew Adams took the prize with 40 pounds. Finally, JD Davis walked away with the highest in Inshore Slam, Big Red, Big Speck, Big Bass, and Cumulative Reds.

Proceeds from the event go to scholarships for local students interested in environmental studies. Entry into the tournament is free or $15 for entry and an event t-shirt. Additional t-shirts are $15 each. Visit www.wolfbaywatershedwatch.org for more information, and watch out for information on next year’s tournament!
