A current or former employee of a public education institution "should" know the roles and responsibilities of local, state and federal governments as they pertain to public schools. However, Sen. Tuberville has proven more than once that he is not well versed in civics and government. He "should" know that the state government establishes academic standards, manages the teachers' certification process and determines students' graduation requirements. It also funds schools through tax mechanisms. In addition, local government develops educational policies and implements assessment systems to evaluate school performance and maintain the quality of education within the state. The federal government focuses on providing supplementary support and coordination at the national level. For instance, it implements programs and provides crucial services to disadvantaged populations. Federal agencies such as the Department of Education and the National Science Foundation recommend teaching strategies to the states and contribute to education research. Instead of placing blame on public education and accusing teachers of being "woke," Sen. Tuberville could better serve his constituents by supporting public education and by sharing correct and up to date information.
