Legal Services Alabama will host a free community class Sept. 30 to introduce Legal Compass AL, a new online tool designed to make legal resources more accessible for Alabamians who may not qualify for traditional legal aid.
The class will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at LSA’s Mobile office, located at 110 North Lafayette St. According to a news release, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson will be recognized at noon with an award honoring his support of LSA, including his role in securing the Lafayette Building space for the office.
Legal Compass AL launched this month and is available at www.legalcompassal.org. The self-help site allows users to describe legal problems in their own words. The platform then creates a civil legal action plan with recommendations, forms and links to relevant information.
“Our LSA attorneys have developed 16 legal action plans that cover the legal areas with the greatest demand for client services,” Guy Lescault, LSA executive director, said in the release. “With the Legal Compass AL site launch this month, we hope that the site will help narrow the justice gap and increase access to justice for more Alabamians.”
The Mobile class marks the final stop in a series of in-person training sessions held across the state in Birmingham, Anniston, Madison and Jasper according to the release. Participants will learn to access and navigate the platform in real time while providing feedback on its usability. Staff will be on hand to guide attendees, though the sessions are not intended to provide legal advice.
“Legal Compass AL is an incredible resource for those who may not know where to turn for legal help,” Lescault said. “We encourage anyone in need of assistance or interested in learning more about their legal rights to attend this free class.”
Space is limited, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early. Per the release, all participants will receive a small token of appreciation, and those who complete a survey at the end of the training will receive a Wal-Mart gift card.
