School's nearly out, Memorial Day is around the corner and summer reading programs are about to launch in libraries across the county.

That means it's the perfect time to mix things up.

It's a chance to dive into something new — whether that means boarding a mystery train, decorating a DnD dice bag or taking a mermaid photoshoot. These local events offer more than just a way to pass the time. They encourage imagination, spark learning and bring families together in creative, meaningful ways.

MERMAID MINI PHOTOSHOOT AND BOOK LAUNCH

What: Salt + Soul Photography Studios will host a whimsical Mermaid-themed mini photoshoot event combined with the launch of the new children's book "Mermaid Manners." Each child will receive a signed copy of the book, a magical Mermaid photoshoot and glitter hair tinsel. The event includes a book reading and meet and greet with the author. Limited spots available. TEEN D&D – MINI FIGURE PAINTING AND DICE BAG DECORATING

What: Teens are invited to the Orange Beach Public Library for a creative afternoon of fantasy-themed crafts. Participants can bring their own Dungeons & Dragons figures to paint or use the library's 3D printer to create a new character. Materials will also be provided to decorate a custom dice bag ahead of the summer campaign.

When: Saturday, May 24, 3-5 p.m.

HOOVES & HEROES FARM DAY

What: Celebrate Memorial Day with a patriotic day of family-friendly fun at the farm. Activities include horse rides, a mobile petting zoo by Maynard Family Farms, inflatables from Bucks Party Rentals and a variety of shopping vendors. The petting zoo runs from 1-4 p.m. Unlimited jump bands are available for inflatable access. Food trucks and free parking on-site.

WESTERN MURDER MYSTERY DINNER

What: Guests are invited to step into the wild western town of Wales West for an immersive, interactive mystery experience aboard the Dame Anne locomotive. Attendees will help solve a murder mystery alongside Sheriff Gunn during this 90- to 120-minute ride, complete with character interactions, clues and family-friendly fun. The evening includes an authentic steam engine excursion, appetizers at the station, a full meal with tea and water, dessert, photos with the cast and crew, and access to a putt-putt golf course.
