Sports Editor McNanna reflects on opening week of high school football season

The first week of high school football is in the books and all I can say is, I don't know if there will be another crazier week than this the rest of the season for me personally.

From our first-ever media day Tuesday, to finalizing our fall sports preview tab, to Thursday's marquee matchup between St. Michael and Gulf Shores to open the season, all before Friday's dramatic finish in Fairhope.

If you haven't heard, or seen, yet, Nolan Phillips' 75-yard pick-six as time expired won the Fairhope Pirates' opening game over Spanish Fort and our video, posted on @GCMSportsAL social accounts, was shared thousands of times and seen hundreds of thousands of times.

Yes, you can expect unique coverage of Baldwin County sports, but I must say I can't go out on a limb and say that every week we'll have a clip that gets shared to a nationwide platform that covers high school sports like MaxPreps.

I know it won't be the last time but for the first time, it was just lucky timing and lucky placement that the play came my way and Phillips jumped right into my frame than ran right out of it faster than I could keep up.

Personally, I don't think I had covered a football game that came down to the final play as time expired like that before, let alone on a turnover of that length.

But as I ran down the sideline along the rest of the Pirate sideline to catch up with Phillips and the crowd was going nuts, I don't know if I'll be in a louder environment in a high school setting. I'm positive the entire city could hear that stadium erupt as he crossed the goal line and you can't tell me differently.

It was one heck of a way to end my first week of covering high school football games in Alabama and served as another reminder that I'm where I need to be.

Growing up, I've seen media members host interview events like our media day, and then I went out and hosted one alongside an incredible team that made everything go smoothly.

Growing up, I watched Philip Rivers play football on Sundays and Mark Hudspeth and his staff coach football on Saturdays, and then I went out and shared the sidelines with them while highlighting their new players.

Growing up, and now professionally, I've gone to MaxPreps for scores, standings, playoff brackets, rosters; and now a video I took is among their content.

This has been just the first week of living the dream down here in Alabama, and I look forward to what Week 2 has in store.

Thanks to all for sharing and following our page, be sure to tell your friends so everyone can get all of the coverage from Baldwin County sports at @GCMSportsAL.
