Jax State opens doors to Alabama's Option B high school graduates

High school seniors graduating through Alabama's Option B diploma pathway now have a clear route to Jacksonville State University, thanks to a vote by the university's Board of Trustees on April 15.

JSU will begin accepting students who graduate with an Option B diploma, provided they meet GPA requirements. The change places the university among a growing number of institutions recognizing the state's alternative credential, which was originally designed to fast-track students into the workforce.

"Alabama's Option B Diploma provides another pathway for students to pursue their goals, whether that means entering the workforce or continuing their education," said Jessica Wiggins, associate vice president of enrollment management. "Jax State is excited to offer admission to students who choose this pathway and support their continued academic success."

Option B allows eligible high school students to graduate early by completing certain college-level coursework and credentialing in technical programs. While the track emphasizes career readiness, the Alabama State Department of Education has encouraged postsecondary institutions to consider it equivalent to traditional diplomas for college admission.

"Jacksonville State is committed to serving all learners by offering multiple points of access to higher education," said Dr. Christie Shelton, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. "Accepting both diploma options ensures we remain responsive to the evolving needs of Alabama students, families and school systems."

University officials emphasized that students entering through the Option B track will have full access to JSU's academic support network, including professional advising, tutoring, success coaching, learning specialists and supplemental instruction through the Student Success Center.
