Hike into the new year at Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park visitors can put 2020 in the past and hike into the new year with a First Day Hike on Friday.

The First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to take part in outdoor activities.

On New Year’s Day, free guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states. The Gulf State Park is one local event in the program. According to America’s State Parks, almost 85,000 people participated in First Day Hikes across the country hiking more than 176,000 miles.

Gulf State Park staff will lead a guided hike on Rosemary Dunes Trail at 1 p.m. if the weather permits. The trail is a good location to see native wildlife and nesting bald eagles. Participants are encouraged to bring cameras. The trail is considered an easy hike on paved trail that extends for 4 miles. Hikers should bring snacks and water.

Anyone wanting to participate should meet at the south trailhead of Rosemary Dunes Trail next to The Indigo on Beach Highway. The hike will begin at 1 p.m. Current COVID-19 guidelines apply. Hikers are asked to social distance from other guests and staff.
