Health Department issues public swim advisory for park in south Fairhope

Update, April 11: The swim advisory has been removed.

FAIRHOPE – The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued a public swimming advisory for Mary Ann Nelson Park at 10646 County Road 1 in Fairhope.

Two recent successive tests of swimming water quality were poor, according to a news release. Swimming in this area may lead to an increased risk of illness, the release said.

Monitoring will continue, and the advisory will be lifted once bacteria levels fall below the Environmental Protection Agency’s threshold.

ADPH and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management operate the bacteriological water quality monitoring and notification program under a grant from the EPA’s BEACH Act Program, which involves the routine collection of water samples from 25 high-use coastal recreational sites.
