The City of Gulf Shores is preparing to celebrate 38 years as a Tree City USA with its 38th-annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway.
Presented by the Gulf Shores Beautification Board, the event is set for Saturday, Feb. 15, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center. Trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies are gone.
Residents within city limits are invited to select up to four trees per household from a variety of species, including red maple, pawpaw, sweetshrub, green ash, Chinese pistache, wild black cherry and overcup oak. Proof of residency is required to participate.
To ensure the success of their new plantings, attendees will receive one-gallon container trees accompanied by detailed care guides. In addition to the seven species offered, 100 hardwood trees in larger three-gallon containers will be available, providing more options for residents looking to enhance their yards.
Adding a touch of excitement to the morning, 24 attendees will be randomly selected to receive specialty fruit trees, an added incentive to join the celebration.
City Arborist Chuck Owens and the Gulf Shores Landscape Division team will be present to share expert advice on tree planting and maintenance. Their guidance will ensure residents have the tools and knowledge needed to help their new trees thrive in the coastal Alabama environment.
The Arbor Day event highlights the city's commitment to preserving and expanding its urban canopy, a dedication that has earned Gulf Shores recognition as a Tree City USA for nearly four decades.
