Drivers in Gulf Shores will face a new traffic pattern beginning Monday, Dec. 16, as construction crews progress on the Highway 59 Expansion Project.
The latest phase of work involves the construction of permanent medians south of the bridge, which will result in the elimination of left-hand turns at East 16th Avenue.
According to city officials, traffic barrels that were temporarily moved in the mornings to accommodate school traffic will no longer be adjusted. Instead, drivers traveling southbound on Highway 59 to Gulf Shores schools are encouraged to plan ahead and use one of three alternate routes: East 20th Avenue, East 15th Avenue or Highway 180 (Fort Morgan Road).
“We appreciate your cooperation as progress continues on adding a new southbound lane to Highway 59,” city officials said in a Facebook post.
This change marks a significant step forward in the ongoing project to add a new southbound lane to Highway 59, a vital corridor for residents and visitors alike.
Residents with questions or concerns about the project are encouraged to contact the Gulf Shores Engineering Department at (251) 968-1166 for more information.
