The City of Gulf Shores is set to host a grand opening for the 12, lighted pickleball courts at the Sportsplex tomorrow morning, Dec. 15.
The city council originally approved the plan during its May 9 meeting where it was determined the cost of the $780,000 project was to be split between the city and Gulf Shores | Orange Beach Sports and Events. The partnership allowed the number of courts to increase from six to 12 and construction began with a June 22 groundbreaking.
“As the growth of pickleball continues, these courts will also provide sports tourism opportunities through possible tournaments and league play,” the city’s announcement said.
The city and sports tourism group will co-host the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. where a ceremonial first dink will follow.
“The 12 outdoor, lighted courts are located on the east side of Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium and share the parking lot with the Varsity Baseball Field,” the city said. “Pickleball players have been utilizing the gymnasium at the Cultural Center and outdoor basketball courts for play, limiting court availability. With these new courts, residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to play on certified pickleball courts year-round.”
