Gulf Shores City Schools is celebrating a significant achievement for its leadership team. Kevin Corcoran, the school board president, is making waves in the world of education as he has been nominated to represent the district as a 2024 All-State School Board Member by the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB).
Nominees are judged on their commitment to AASB School Board Member Academy training, adherence to the School Board Governance Improvement Act of 2012, and active involvement in educational activities at the local, state and national levels.
Candidates are also evaluated on their activism in legislative and local issues that advocate for K-12 public school children. Participation in events like AASB Advocacy Day and the AASB poverty simulation is key, as is leadership in local education through efforts in property tax referendums, school consolidation, and policy reviews.
The selection process considers a nominee's support for board policies, involvement in community activities, and contributions to public understanding and support for local schools. Additionally, nominees must uphold the highest ethical standards as outlined in the Alabama Code of Conduct for School Board Members, and maintain strong relationships with the superintendent, fellow board members and local officials.
An anonymous panel of former school board members will review the nominations, with no more than five individuals receiving the All-State honor annually.
The nomination was celebrated at a recent Board of Education meeting, where the board, the superintendent, assistant superintendent, chief school financial officer and the nominee's family gathered for the occasion.
