Gulf Shores city council members gathered for a work session meeting on Feb. 19, where a motion was presented to begin phase one of a project to realign Waterway West at the intersection of W. 1st Street and Highway 59.
Per the presented documents, if approved phase one of the project would include removing the existing hairpin turn and extending a new alignment across a portion of the right-of-way and three parcels located at the intersection.
According to Clint Colvin, construction manager, the first step of the project would be to transfer the property from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), so the city can begin construction.
"EDG (Engineering Design Group) will perform surveys and do the legal descriptions of the property that will be need to be transferred from ALDOT in order to build the new road the way we want to," Colvin said. "EDG is going to help us get all those moving pieces figured out so we can start and at the end of this have a subdivision plat of the reconfigured right-of-way."
Per the presented documents, the design group has already submitted a bid proposal for the project for $26,100, and is already included in the city's 2024 budget.
Colvin also added that the council has already approved two previous resolutions pertaining to the project, for conceptual and preliminary design work and professional services from Barge Design Studios.
This agenda item was scheduled to be voted on at the Feb. 26 city council meeting, at 4 p.m.
