On the first day of competition at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s state volleyball tournament, all three local representatives won their opening match to advance to the final four of their respective brackets.

Class 5A Gulf Shores beat Jasper 3-2 and Class 4A Orange Beach (Priceville) and Class 2A Bayshore Christian (Fyffe) swept their first opponents to secure a spot in the state semifinals. Spanish Fort and Bayside Academy are set to open their Class 6A state bracket tomorrow morning.

The Dolphins’ five-set match advanced them to face Westminster Christian only one match away from the state final. Gulf Shores is in its first trip to state since 2011 and started its semifinal match at 4 p.m.

The Makos drew Montgomery Catholic after the sweep of Priceville Tuesday morning. Orange Beach’s state semifinal match was set to start at 6 p.m. along with the other semifinal matchup of Trinity Presbyterian and Deshler.

The Eagles took one step closer to their third consecutive state final match but drew Pleasant Valley in the state semifinal first. Bayshore Christian was also set to start its semifinal contest at 6 p.m. with Long and Donoho in the other semifinal.

In the Class 6A bracket, Spanish Fort was set to open against Oxford, and Bayside Academy against Hazel Green, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
