Gulf Shores City Schools announced late last week the appointment of Laura Davis as the new head volleyball coach at Gulf Shores High School.

Davis brings to the Dolphins a wealth of playing and coaching experience, coupled with a deep commitment to student–athlete development both on and off the court, the announcement says.

"Laura's track record of success as both a player and a coach make her the ideal leader for our volleyball program," Matt Akin, superintendent of Gulf Shores City Schools, said in the announcement. "Her dedication to fostering discipline, strong team culture and individual growth aligns perfectly with our district's values. We look forward to the positive impact she will have on our student–athletes."

A PROVEN ATHLETE AND LEADER

Originally from Huntsville, Davis is an alumna of Grissom High School, where she first discovered her passion for volleyball.

She went on to play Division I volleyball at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as an outside hitter. During her collegiate career, she led UAB in both kills and digs, earned All-Tournament honors and served as president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, roles that "demonstrated her leadership and commitment to excellence," the announcement said.

DISTINGUISHED COACHING CAREER

Davis's coaching résumé spans several of Alabama's most competitive high school programs, including Hoover High School, Spain Park, Homewood and Bob Jones High School. At Bob Jones, she led the team to an AHSAA 6A state championship in 2008 and a state runner-up finish in 2007, earning multiple Coach of the Year honors from The Huntsville Times and The Birmingham News.

Three years ago, Davis moved to Gulf Shores and joined the Dolphins as varsity assistant and junior varsity coach. In that time, her emphasis on discipline, cohesive team culture and individualized player growth has helped lay the foundation for continued program success.

"I am honored to lead the Gulf Shores High School volleyball program," Davis said. "I believe in fostering an environment where every athlete can grow in skill, confidence and character. I'm excited to build on the strong tradition already in place and work alongside our talented student-athletes, staff and supportive community."
