Gulf Shores families join forces for community yard sale

GULF SHORES — On a frigid morning down Wedgewood Drive, toys, clothes and other goodies were set up in front of a group of houses for a simultaneous, multi-family yard sale on Dec. 7 and 8.

Emily Kelly, one of the Wedgewood residents involved in the group yard sale, said she decided to invite neighbors around the intersection of Wedgewood Drive and Bear Creek Drive for a community yard sale after one of her neighbors committed to doing a yard sale at the same time as Kelly.

“I hope to make this a yearly event maybe in the spring and expand it to more than just our section of Wedgewood,” Kelly said.

A total of four houses participated with items for sale such as clothes and shoes for all ages, puzzles, books, glassware, bicycles, Barbie dolls, toy horses, costumes, paintings, resin art, antique furniture, old stereos and a reel-to-reel machine.

The yard sale was held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. Some yard sale attendees (who seemed to be professional yard sale shoppers) started arriving by 7:30 a.m. to “get the good stuff” first even though some houses were still setting up.

A peak crowd of cars lined the street early in the morning, and they eventually trickled off as the day went on. With the size of the crowd the yard sale attracted, Kelly said she hopes more surrounding houses will be interested in the future if/when another community yard sale is planned.
