A pair of Baldwin County alumni provided a helping hand toward Montevallo baseball’s new single-game program records for runs, RBIs and batting average thanks to Wednesday’s 33-1 win.
Gulf Shores’ Dominic Maldet launched a three-run home run in the first inning before Baldwin County High’s Landen Walker closed the door on the mound with three strikeouts in the seventh inning to beat the Miles Bears in non-conference play at home.
Entering the March 19 contest against Miles, the Falcons had dropped five of their previous six games where they scored 35 runs during the stretch. With a 14-run first, two-run second, one-run third, six-run fourth and sixth innings, as well as a four-run fifth frame, Montevallo nearly matched that total in a single run-rule victory.
Maldet helped set the tone in the opening stanza with his first home run of the season that increased the Falcons’ lead to 8-0 early. With a single and another run scored in the second, the former Dolphin helped Montevallo stake claim to a 15-1 lead before his walk started a string of four in a row to make it 17-1 in the third.
When he was pinch hit for in the fourth inning, Maldet became one of eight Falcons to register a 1.000 batting average for the contest which helped set a single-game program record with a .591 team batting average. His three RBIs and runs scored also helped his team rewrite the Montevallo record book as nine Falcon hitters produced multiple hits and 11 baserunners scored multiple runs to set new single-game records of 33 runs scored and 30 RBIs.
With the win, Montevallo improved to 14-13 overall entering this weekend’s series against Valdosta State as part of Gulf South Conference action.
Through the first 17 games, Maldet has logged a .182 batting average with 5 RBIs, 3 walks and a stolen base offensively. Behind the plate, he owned a 1.000 fielding percentage with 103 putouts and 7 assists on 110 chances and has caught 4 would-be base stealers.
On the mound, Walker made his sixth appearance of the season against Miles. Over 4.1 innings pitched so far, he’s racked up 9 strikeouts over a trio of scoreless efforts for the Falcons. Eight hits and five earned runs allowed have helped record a 10.38 ERA.
The St. Francis Fighting Saints from Illinois own the NCAA Division II single-game records for most runs scored (71), hits (44), RBIs (53) and walks (22) in their 71-1 win over Robert Morris on April 2, 1996. Thirty St. Francis hitters recorded plate appearances in the first inning as the Fighting Saints scored 26 runs in the first, 22 in the second, four in the third and 19 in the fourth and final inning.
Montevallo finished with 26 hits and 13 walks to go along with their 33 runs and 30 RBIs. The Falcons’ previous single-game records were 28 runs scored in 2001 and 26 RBIs in 2008. The most base hits in a single game sit at 29 from 2005 and 18 walks from 2012.
