Another year in the books.
With the fast-paced life today's world promotes, it's hard to remember everything that happened in 365 days. Luckily, Baldwin County has a local news source to capture those memories. Gulf Coast Media's newsroom spent time in December looking back on headlines and deep dives from the past year to bring a roundup of the most important, memorable and impactful storylines to readers.
Much of what we talk about in Baldwin County is centered around the area's growth. Whether that means new businesses opening or those that have stood the test of time, or how municipalities are trying to keep up with infrastructure needs, or the unique and quirky stories that live in momentarily infamy online, GCM has been through this whirlwind of a year with you.
In July, Gov. Kay Ivey announced the latest, $67 million round of GOMESA funding for projects focused on sewer infrastructure, water quality improvements, research, land acquisitions and recreational access improvements. Baldwin County has received more than $30 million from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, a revenue-sharing model passed in 2006 for coastal communities in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas for monies generated by oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico. Major projects in this latest round include a $5 million expansion to Graham Creek Preserve in Foley, a $2 million amphitheater in Robertsdale, $7 million to Daphne for Bayfront Park, $3 million for the Spanish Fort Causeway Master Plan and a $4.8 million boat launch off County Road 6.
