Ladies, fancy yourself the outdoorsy type?

Registration for the fall Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop opened on Aug. 1 for first-time attendees and will open Aug. 7 at 7 a.m. for both newcomers and returning participants.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) sponsors the event, which will be held at the 4-H Center near Columbiana Oct. 4-6.

The workshop, designed for women ages 18 and older, offers three days of hands-on instruction in various outdoor activities. Participants can choose four classes from more than 30 options, including archery, ATV handling, backyard wildlife, bird watching, boat handling, canoeing, camp cooking, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, shooting sports and nature photography.

In a news release, Katie Burks, BOW coordinator, said the classes are ideal for women who are interested in outdoor activities but unsure where to start.

“There are many ladies who would like to get involved with outdoor activities but are apprehensive to do so because they don’t know where to start,” Burks said. “BOW is ideal for those women because every participant is taught at a beginner’s level with an instructor leading them along the way.”

The registration fee for BOW is $275, which includes meals, dormitory-style lodging, program materials and instruction. Additionally, participants must have a valid all-game, small-game, freshwater fishing, wildlife management area or Wildlife Heritage license.

“Enrollment is limited, and classes fill up very quickly,” Burks said. “Those interested in attending BOW this fall should register as soon as possible to make sure they get into the classes they desire.”
