Big Lots in Fairhope is out of business, but the future of the former property remains in question.
In October 2024, Big Lots Stores Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and two months later, the chain announced it would cease operations, liquidate and close all remaining stores. All 22 stores in Alabama are expected to be closed, including the two in Baldwin County located in Fairhope and Foley.
As residents may remember, both locations held massive sales in an effort to clear out remaining inventory. The Fairhope location officially closed on Feb 28.
With Big Lots now gone, some Fairhope locals may wonder what will go in its place now that its site housed at the Eastern Shore Shopping Center sits empty. However, as of right now, it is unclear exactly what will go in its place and how soon the tenant will be replaced.
A city councilman in Fairhope told Gulf Coast Media he is unsure what will replace the former Big Lots. Another source familiar with the situation, a nearby business owner, told Gulf Coast Media rent may be an issue in bringing a new business there.
Piggly Wiggly and Winn-Dixie are already located adjacent to the property.
