Future teachers honored during special ceremony as they commit to shaping tomorrow's classrooms

Four Baldwin County High School seniors stepped into the spotlight Tuesday morning during a special Future Teachers Signing Day ceremony, committing to careers in education as they prepare to begin their college journeys at Coastal Alabama Community College.

JaNya Crook, Demeitric Lymon, Abigail Paul and Addison Scarborough were recognized for answering the call to teach, each sharing their aspirations and the personal motivations behind their decision. From wanting to make a difference in students' lives to being inspired by the teachers who shaped their own, the students said they felt drawn to the profession by a desire to help others reach their full potential.

The event was hosted by the school's chapter of Future Teachers of Alabama, an organization that supports middle and high school students exploring education as a career. The BCHS chapter, established in 2021, provides students with opportunities to job shadow educators and participate in service projects throughout the school year.

BCHS teacher Chantelle McPherson, who serves as one of the chapter's advisors, spoke during the ceremony and reflected on the powerful, lasting influence of educators. She shared memories of her own former teacher, Eleanor Lamar, who inspired her to pursue teaching.

"As a teacher, your mission is to inspire the next generation. Every lesson, every interaction, is an opportunity to inspire curiosity, build confidence and help students discover their unique strengths," McPherson said. "Inspiration is contagious. When you believe in your students, they begin to believe in themselves. Your enthusiasm, compassion and dedication can transform not just individual lives but entire communities. Your inspiration creates a ripple effect."

BCHS Principal Richard Paul, whose daughter was among the signees, addressed the crowd. He spoke about the vital role educators play in every profession and emphasized the importance of having strong teachers in the classroom. He encouraged the future educators to embrace the challenges of teaching and reminded them that no school day is ever the same.

Future Teachers of Alabama is part of the Aspiring Educators/Student Division of the Alabama Education Association. The organization's annual signing day aims to spark statewide enthusiasm for teaching and help address Alabama's teacher shortage by recognizing students who are committed to becoming educators.

Advisors for the BCHS Future Teachers of Alabama chapter include McPherson, Misty Byrd, Diona Davis and Vickie Locke.
