Governor Kay Ivey has awarded over $1.1 million in grants to assist six local governments in reducing operating costs through energy-efficient improvements.
The grants, part of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program, will enable recipients to replace outdated systems with modern, efficient equipment, significantly cutting expenses.
Among the beneficiaries is the City of Foley Utilities Board, which received $182,997 for HVAC upgrades at the Riviera Utilities headquarters. This funding aims to enhance the efficiency of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
“These upgrades represent a long-term investment that will lower energy costs for years to come, saving money in local budgets that can be put toward other needs,” Ivey said in a news release. “I commend the leaders who secured these grants for recognizing the benefits of focusing on energy efficiency.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) is administering the grants, using funds provided by the U.S. Department of Energy.
“Taking steps to increase efficiency is a sensible and sustainable approach to lowering costs and saving taxpayer money,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in supporting these forward-looking projects.”
