Foley's water towers will soon shine again, highlighting the city's name and logo after city council signed off on a project to illuminate the structures.
Council this week approved the "Light Up the Tanks" initiative, a partnership between the city and Riviera Utilities that will install new LED lights and electrical infrastructure on two of Foley's standing water tanks.
"It's a project that we're working on as a partnership," Mayor Ralph Hellmich said. "Our logos on the water tanks were lit at one time, but after they were painted, the infrastructure to light them was gone."
A third tank near Underwood Road and Baldwin County 24 will not be included. According to Hellmich, that tower doesn't stand on legs and is less visible from the road.
The mayor said the new lighting will be more energy-efficient than the old system.
"The old lights used a lot of electricity," Hellmich said. "We want to go back with LED lights that will once again light up our new logos on the tank and use less electricity."
The project includes the installation of new wiring and conduit as well as eight LED lights along the tank handrails, restoring the illuminated city name and making the towers more visible at night.
