For the second season in a row, the Foley Lions hosted and won the Tommy Cleverdon Invitational Tournament behind a total team effort.
Foley beat Elberta 8-6 and Booker T. Washington 17-1 to help secure its first-place positioning on April 5. The Lions’ seven runs allowed proved to be the difference maker to win the tiebreaker for the fewest runs allowed against Cottage Hill Christian, who beat Elberta 8-6 and BTW 18-3.
Junior Christiana Holmes, Foley’s lone varsity starter who returned from last year, was named tournament MVP thanks in part to a 5-for-8 effort at the plate with a pair of home runs and 3 doubles to go along with 8 RBIs.
Eighth grader Harleigh Brockett complemented Holmes’ outing with a 2.33 ERA over 6 innings with 5 strikeouts in the pitcher’s circle. Junior Jamaya Bronson rounded out the Lions’ all-tournament selections after she registered a hit in half of her 6 at-bats, including a home run, to go along with 3 RBIs and 2 walks on top of holding down the shortstop position.
Eighth-grader Madison Willis and seventh-grader Ava Sanks from Elberta, Madison Brown, Paislei Daughtery and Emma Rollins from Cottage Hill Christian and Kate Rice from Booker T. Washington also took home all-tournament team recognition.
With the wins, Foley improved to 8-14 overall on the season with three regular-season contests remaining this week. The Lions were set to square off with Fairhope on Wednesday and Friday with a matchup against Robertsdale in between on Thursday. After a spring break recess, Foley will compete next in the Class 7A Area 2 tournament on April 28 and 29.
