Foley Main Street seeks artist to cruise creativity into downtown bike rack sculptures

FOLEY — Foley Main Street is looking for an artist to design, fabricate, deliver and install sculptural bicycle racks around Downtown Foley.

According to Foley Main Street Executive Director Darrelyn Dunmore, bicycling has become a popular way of transportation throughout the city.

“It is a connectivity issue,” Dunmore said. “We know that if there is no place for people to park their bikes, that they are not going to be able to lock them up. It is also another way to help encourage people to get out and get around downtown.”

Whether you are a professional or amateur artist, Foley Main Street’s project is open to all. This project does require that the bike racks be made of metal such as bronze, iron steel or other easily maintainable metal that is appropriate for an outdoor setting.

The rack must accommodate a minimum of two bicycles and must be constructed of durable materials.

The design of the racks should reflect Foley’s history, the nature of downtown and include the visual and musical arts.

Locations where these bike racks will be placed include the parking lot side of the pedestrian bridge, Holmes Medical Museum, Pine Street Park, Cat Alley Walkway and the Drowsy Poet Corner.

“We get a lot of traffic at Heritage Park,” Dunmore said. “With that said, this would be a place for people to park their bikes and go up and over into the park. We have a lot of art murals within walking distance, so it seemed like a good central location.”

Artist proposals must feature a detailed description of the bicycle racks including a sketch of each location idea, images of past work, artist’s biographical material including resume and awards received, explanation of fabrication, care and installation of description and sample of commissions, and a copy of liability insurance will be required before the project is started.

Submissions must be turned in no later than 5 p.m. on April 30 to info@foleymainstreet.com.
