After she was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year in her debut season with the Montevallo Falcons, Foley alumna Emily Wolf hasn’t missed a beat as a sophomore and recently picked up all-conference and all-region honors from the indoor track season.
With silver medals in the shot put and weight throw from the conference championship meet, Wolf helped Montevallo finish third in the team competition.
As a top-five finisher, she also picked up second team All-Gulf South Conference and United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region honors in each event. Wolf was one of four from the Falcon women’s team to rack up six All-Region selections.
A 12.78-meter shot put and a 15.85-meter weight throw both ranked second in program history according to records on athletic.net. Wolf set the Montevallo shot put school record at 13.12m at the UAB Green and Gold Invite on Feb. 8 and sits behind only Nyla Shipman’s weight throw of 18.50m from last year’s conference championships.
This season’s best marks, which also set personal records for Wolf, marked a 1.13-meter increase in the weight throw and a 0.38-meter increase in the shot put compared to last year’s season bests.
Outdoor season starts with a bang
Wolf also started her outdoor season on a high note with wins in the discus and hammer throw from the UWA Invitational on March 8. Thanks to a 44.24-meter discus and a 46.71-meter hammer throw, Wolf was one of three Falcons to earn weekly recognition from the conference.
Those marks helped secure Field Athlete of the Week honors from the Gulf South Conference as well as a Montevallo Athlete of the Week nod.
Gabe Gamble was also a conference Field Athlete of the Week and Slate Rohrer was a GSC Freshman of the Week selection. Gamble won the triple jump (14.49m) and took fifth in the long jump (6.31m) as Rohrer won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.91 and was part of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished fifth in 44.16.
The most decorated thrower in Foley Lion history followed up a hot start with a pair of school records at Montevallo’s host meet, the Falcon Classic on March 14. Wolf registered a shot put of 12.43 meters and a discus throw of 44.93 meters to become the new outdoor school record holder according to marks on athletic.net.
In addition to gold medals in both of those events, Wolf added a third-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.04 meters. She sits behind only Shipman’s mark (49.90m) in the all-time school rankings in that event with a 49.41-meter distance personal record at last year’s conference championships.
Montevallo is scheduled to compete next in the Mississippi State Alumni Bulldog Relays on March 20-22.
