FOLEY — The Foley Lions notched a 41-14 win in the opening game of the 2016 varsity football season on Lester Smith Field at Ivan Jones Stadium in Foley.
Foley used a pair of Bear special teams miscues to break open a 35-14 lead in the third quarter, adding a touchdown on the last play of the game to account for the final score.
The two miscues, a fumbled punt and a fumbled punt return, proved to be the difference as the Bears actually outgained the Lions 310 to 305 on the night.
Foley gained most of its yardage on the ground, 275 yards on 39 carries with quarterbacks Chris Armstrong and David Hendricks combining for 3 of 6 passing for 30 yards.
Armstrong rushed for three touchdowns with 80 yards on 16 carries, while running back Tyron Cosby led the Lions with 100 yards on 11 carries and a score. Dalton Gideons' 89-yard scoring romp on the last play of the game gave him 976 yards on 7 carries to finish the game.
Bear quarterback Nate Krebs led the Bears with 197 yards on 22 of 33 passing, with 47 yards on eight carries. Evan Robertson caught seven passes for 99 yards; Shelton Deen caught seven for 27 yards and a touchdown; Blake Nichols ran for a score and had three catches for 16 yards to lead the Bears. Deandre Prim led the Bears rushing attack with 57 yards on 23 carries.
Up next, Foley remains at home, taking its 1-0 record into 7A Region 1 play against archrival Fairhope in a renewal of the Blue-Gold Classic, while Robertsdale (0-1) opens up 6A Region 1 play against the Blount Leopards at J.D. Sellars Stadium in Robertsdale.
