The Fairhope Public Utility Electric Department has earned a national commendation from the American Public Power Association for its role in restoring power to Florida communities in the wake of Hurricane Milton.
On Oct. 8, 2024, a team of 11 crew members from Fairhope traveled to New Smyrna Beach and Winter Park in Florida to assist with power restoration efforts, according to a news release. The storm had caused widespread outages, leaving thousands without electricity. Working alongside local crews, the Fairhope team tackled challenging conditions to bring power back to residents.
"Mutual aid is critical in times of disaster, allowing us to extend our resources to those in need," Electric Superintendent Ben Patterson said in the release. "It's about communities helping communities, and we're proud to be a part of it."
The commendation highlights Fairhope's participation in the American Public Power Association's Mutual Aid Network, which coordinates utility resources to address widespread outages during disasters. This network ensures that affected areas receive timely assistance from member utilities across the country.
